Pharmacotherapeutic group: Dopamine agonist
Therapeutic indication: Parkinsonism & Prolactinomas & Amenorrhea & Galactorrhea & Suppression Lactation & Acromegaly & Infertility therapy adjunct
Dosage and Administration: Tablet 2.5 mg
Parkinsonism:
Initial: 1.25mg one or two with meals. Maybe increased by 2.5mg increments every fourteen to twenty-eight days.
Maintenance: 2.5 to 40mg qd/po taken divided doses with meals.
Hyperprolactinemia:
Initial: 1.25 to 2.5mg at bedtime/ po. Maybe increased by 2.5mg every 3 to 7 days as needed.
Maintenance: 2.5mg bid or tid with meals. Doses of up to 15mg have been used.
Acromegaly:
Initial: 1.25 to 2.5mg at bedtime/ po for 3 days. Maybe increased by 1.25 or 2.5mg every 3 to 7 days up to 30mg/d taken in divided doses with meals or at bedtime.
Maintenance: 10 to 30mg /d taken divided doses with meals or at bedtime. Up to 100mg/d has been used.
Lactation suppression:
Initial: 2.5mg bid taken with meals.
Maintenance: 2.5 to 7.5mg /d taken divided doses with meals or at bedtime for 14 days. Has been used for up to 21days if needed.
Side effect: Confusion, dyskinesia, hallucination, myocardial infarction, seizures, hypotension( especially orthostatic hypotension), nausea, constipation, diarrhea, drowsiness or tiredness, dry mouth, leg cramps at night, loss of appetite, mental depression, Raynaud’s phenomenon, stomach pain, stuffy nose, vomiting.
